I recently purchased a phone that is retailed at $89.99 with a $50.00 discount, so the price of the phone was $39.99. The phone will be delivered to California where the sales tax is 8.25% and the website charged me $24.99 for tax. The note on the website said I would be paying sales tax on the original price of the phone but 8.25% of $89.99 is not $24.99.

Can a verizon representative tell me how tax is figured for online sales?
