Google's advertising tools and Yahoo's Overture advertising tools provide easy and cheap ways to promote any size business on the Web. Give it a try. It is impossible to explain just how easy it is. You can set the spending limit as low as you want. Really, really low, in fact. You might even find that it is a fun excercise. You can try LookSmart too, but it's not quite as user-friendly.

Best depends on what you want out of it, how much money/effort you are willing to put into it, and how long you are willing to wait for your business to start getting built up.

Looks like you already have a web site. That is a good start. I was surprised to read yesterday that General Motors was downgraded again and is looking pretty weak - while Google just made the NASDAQ 100! The lesson being - web search and web presence are pretty vital to a company.

You want to draw people to your web site and educate them about your services. You also want to build up your credentials. The more credibility you have, the more interest people have in you when they hear of you.

For starters, put some small photos on your web site. Nothing that will eat up too much bandwidth or make the page load too slowly. Just something that will lend a splash of color.

Use some CSS on your web pages to sort of brighten them up just a little bit too. Black on white is crisp, and professional looking. On the other hand, it can seem a little dry and dull.

Try having one or two of your staff members write some articles touting a particular technology and a big success they had with it. There are lots of places to publish such articles these days.

1. online magazine web sites - e.g. JavaWorld
2. magazines sold at newsstands and bookstores - Java Report, Web Developer, etc.

Encourage your developers to get one or more certifications in some technology that is relevant to your business.

Sun offers certifications for Java programming, architecture, web design, etc. Microsoft offers an extensive buffet of certifications.

Programmers can mention their certifications in their capsule bios included with the articles they publish, along with your company name and their title there. They can also list their certifications on their resume.

Another big thing these days, especially for computer technology companies like yours is blogs. Consider putting a forward-facing (public) weblog out there.

Have your developers author it but before they post their blog entries, have someone from marketing review them and run them by someone in sales. They can proof-read it, make sure the programmers stay "on-message" and do not send out confusing/conflicting messages about the company's direction. You probably do not want a post going out about how difficult brand-XYZ SQL server is to use the day before your company rolls out a new product line based on it!

Make sure you announce your weblog (blog, that is) at syndic8.com so search robots and people can find it.

Create an account on Technorati.com and list it as your blog, and claim it using the tags and the rest of the process they describe on their site.

Create some del.icio.us tags for the bookmark to your company's home page: baltimore sql jdbc java jsp db2 dotnet cobol vb

Create some public tags on Yahoo's My Web Search site too for a bookmark to your company's home page. Make sure you mark it Public. Making it Private or Community access only will not do you much good in terms of advertising yourself.

Blogs are handy now because they can be searched now, as easily as news stories from Reuters, Associated Press, Washington Post, New York Times, etc. Google, Yahoo, and others now include searches of weblogs.

How cool would it be for you if someone searched: Baltimore JSP DB2 - and came up with a smart little weblog entry from one of your sharpest developers?

It would be very cool!

Make sure you use META tags with keywords defined in them on your web pages. Pick good titles for your web pages. Why? Because web search services like Google uses these pieces of information to "score" how relevant they think a page is to certain topics. If you leave them out, they will not realize your page is seriously discussing those topics. It will be at the bottom of the search results list. That means no one will ever see it.

If you want to get more eyes on your site fast and you have money to spend for advertising, pay for Google ad sense words. I just read yesterday it is becoming a huge business.

Consider advertising your services on Craig's List. It is getting very popular.

Create an entry for your company at http://local.yahoo.com/ and people in Baltimore will notice your there. Hey, right there - near them! Maybe you will even get some walk-ins into your office of some prospective clients at lunch time.

Make sure you send developers and/or managers to local trade shows. And recruiters too, of course!

Consider making some kind of nice give-aways that have your name/addr/phone/URL/email on them. They don't really have to cost you anything to manufacture. You can have a developer create a JSP or HTML quickref card with some handy/useful tricks on them that no one else is talking about. Put it into a PDF file - and put it on your web site for free downloads.

Then you can announce it is available for free downloading. You can announce it and post the URL for it or the page it is on at: digg.com, slashdot.org

Have someone with a digital camera take a photo of your reception area of your office - anything with a plaque with you name of it. Some photos of some of your developers too - or your management team. Upload them to Flickr. Tag them with things like SQL, DB2, etc. - and Baltimore, of course, too.

Have a contest in your office. The prize is something really cool. The winner gets to take a company paid for siteseeing tour around Baltimore (charm city!) with the coolest, funnest person from marketing or sales. Just in case the winner does not have a good eye for photogenic subjects, the other person can act as their guide. They can even step into a couple of the shots, and fill in as photographer and take some photos of the winner in front of some scenery too!

The only hitch is they have to take lots of GOOD photos of the major tourist sights and fun stops in Baltimore (Harborplace, the historic ships docked in the harbor, a good/fancy restaurant at lunch time, the national aquarium, and the zoo). If they don't already have a digital camera, lend them one. If they don't have a media cartridge that has space on it for at least a hundred photos - let them buy one and expense it to the company or something. Should cost less than fifty bucks and that is a reasonable prize. Ask an accountant if you are not sure.

Then have them post those photos to Flickr. Have them tag them with tags like:

baltimore dining - for a restaurant
baltimore zoo animal tiger - for a photo of a Tiger

Then have them create a 43place.com account - if they have Yahoo they probably already have it. Create an entry for each place you have a photo for that does not already have one, over on 43places.com.

Once you have got the place, add a link to the photo for each place to its page on 43places.com!

Now put a hyperlink from a new entry in the company weblog and the company web site describing the marvelous, picturesque tour of Baltimore that a lucky member of your staff won!

Put links on the 43places.com and Flickr pages back to the company's web site.

All of a sudden, you have got "web presence" all over the place. Social sites, geographic sites, business sites, bookmarking sites, weblogs, news, classified ads. You're everywhere!

And, it did not really cost you much money, and you didn't "spam" or do it in an ostentatious, "in your face" kind of way.

Instead, you created some useful stuff, it links back to and/or mentions your company, and you have shown yourselves to be a fun, creative, energetic company. One that knows its way around the web, the Internet, digital media, etc. - and is creating a little "buzz" around Baltimore about itself!

People will certainly know _where_ you are and they will know _who_ you are and they will be finding out _what_ you do all over the place!

It sure beats spraying graffiti on sidewalks, streets, and brick walls like some big budget companies are doing in cities, doesn't it? It is way nicer for everyone than spam too, isn't it? It is like advertising that justifies itself for existing, as something better than just plain advertising.

And, it helps accomplish the same goals as a conventional, old-fashioned, expensive advertising campain.

Someday, you will look back fondly on all this stuff you did and say, "Hey, it is time to create a company podcast!".

LOL, go to it. More power to you.

"THE BEST WAY" is a subjective term to who "YOU" are and and/or your company. What works for one, will not necissarily work for another. The absolute best way to promote a small business online is to NOT WAIST YOUR MONEY. Throwing your money at PayPerClick ads may not be the answer. You should work with a consultant that specilizes in working with small businesses online and customize your approach. A good "round" marketing plan will consist of some pay services, some free submittals, addressing issues with customer paths, content relativity to optimize for searches online, and most importantly, align what you are doing offline in the real world to work "with" what you are doing online. All of this needs to be taken into account. Then design a 3 month plan towards a 6 month goals. The nature of an online site and how things can change so dramtically over 3 - 6 months you do not want to plan too far ahead. So make a 3 month plan, then in 3 months address the results, tweak your plan to achieve your 6 month goal, then also at the time, create a new goal for another 3 months out. This takes strategy.

Sorry I could not give you a "simple" answer,... but if it we're simple, everyone would know how.

I like Yahoo Small Business... start small, think big. Once you know the software and have "hits," you can upgrade and consider more features. Get yourself a business license and Tax ID as soon as possible. As startup costs, the licenses as well as your web costs, internet costs, advertising costs, etc are all deductible business expenses. Why pay them out of pocket? There's a good book at the library called "Marketing without Money" by Nicholas E Bade that will help you get free or very low cost ideas on getting the word out about your business. The first step is to have a business before you start spreading the news about it so start with your county for a business license and then get expert help from organizations like Score and SBA.

Plan your attack. Define which are your best prospects and then determine how best to achieve. Plan your attack. Define which are your best prospects and then determine how best to achieve. Business card and business stationery are good for business.

Small online business require special care with promotion as budget is very low compare to bigger one.You have to narrow down your audience and activities that gets you quick result in region where your service can reach. Adding websites to local search engine and local business directory will do the good job.Add your business Google local business center and other similar places.
