![]() | The way the search engine works for google and all other similar engines, is through the use of programs called spiders. These "robots" go through every site searching for key words in meta tags. Then when a person searches for something, the site with the most tags correlating to the search criteria is then listed. However, the bandwidth, or traffic of the site is another key factor. So, if you wish to get your site at the top, you need to add these tags to your index's html. Then, with a combination of the tags and the incoming traffic, you will begin to reach the top of the list. As far as the actual domain, if your site is closely named to a popular site, this will automatically draw traffic. For example, if you somehow managed to buy google.net, you will get many people looking for google.com Another purpose of the domain name is if it is something popular. Another example would be getcomputers.com; if you had this domain, you would get traffic to your site simply because people will think of this url when trying to search for computers, regardless of if they have ever heard of the site before. Whereas "ACATT.com may stand for "All Computers, All The Time", it is not nearly as attractive or thinkable as "getcomputers.com" Good Luck! |

![]() | The name is relevant only in a small number of search types. For the likes of google it is the meta tags and key words found when trawling sites. In the same way that anti-spam scores a site to decide if it is likely to be spam, sites are scored to see if they are a good match to the search. The more often it appears in a hit list, even if it is initially low ranking, the more likely it will be upgraded towards the top of the list. My web sites have existed for about 7 years, I set three tag words back then, after about a year I was appearing within the first three pages of results, now I can guarentee getting either site at the top of a google search not only by those three key words, but also by related keywords. I have been ranked up because the results checker always found that my site matched the results and was a genuine site. You can also pay to get ahead, this is limited because what you can not really buy is a place in the nodal database that has been created out of millions of previous searchs. So, learn about meta-tags, you can even try them out. Set them on your site, three words that are fairly unusual, publish the site, then a week later search for any two of your key words, see where you are in the results, it will be a lot of pages back. Wait a month and test again with any two words from your three. you are now higher. Now that is in itself a clue of how to get up the list. Put out a lot of searches to your tag word combination (never the full list, use less words and mix the combinations). You will now find that you go up the rankings more quickly. This is because there are more records about your site in the database, more successful hits, so you are gaining points. Obviously three common tag words will be less effective, because a lot of sites are getting hits along with yours. |
