I post loads of awesome pictures on Reddit and no-one gives a hoot. Generally I upload the original picture to imageshack, not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Other than trying to get an image thats appealing to the widest market possible, perhaps it is just done through stronger advertisement tactics? You need to promote your picture, everywhere possible, send out links and just somehow get everyone into it. Posting it is definately not the end of it.
