I need a way to post images on my site that have some kind of message imbedded in them or in the background that indicates I am the original owner of the work. I am planning to at some point to sell products that carry these original designs through my site. I don't actually own copyrights to the designs, but I haven't seen them anywhere else on the web. Do I have to purchase copyrights?

Google 'hidden signature in gimp'. Disable right click (it's just a line of coding). There are free copyright websites, google them. I think there are far more ways of get your art stole, but these are the most common, along with screencaps, which you can't avoid.
