Default translucent images in IE

In my attemt to make cell in a table translucent (see through but still colored) i made a 1px red png image and turned the opacity down to 60% and put it as the bg for that cell. this worked in opera and netscape but in IE it was just a lighter red as opposed to see through for some reason.
if ne 1 knos of an another image format that would be able to do this that will work in all browsers(especcially IE) or a script that can make the cell's bg color less opaqe please help me!
-thanx
