I have a blog on wordpress.com (not wordpress.org). Is there a free program, widget or template that I can upload several photos, make them thumbnails and then when you click on them they become larger for viewing purposes? I know you can do something similar on flickr, but I have not played with it. Is this a good way to go?

This is built into wordpress. You can upload photos into your media library and call them from your post.
